Mendicant’s lean social canvas is a one-page business planning template that allows you to outline the key elements and map out the key information necessary for an NGO, social enterprise. When organizations and teams make decisions, sometimes it comes down to biases and which person around the table is more persuasive. This tool helps anchor discussions and decisions. When you want to make a difference with a complex social or environmental problem, it can be a challenge determining where to start. This can result in organizations trying to do too much – what we call “boiling the ocean. ” This tool helps solve a social problem by narrowing the focus. People who are just starting up an organization to make social change happen face an immediate question: What type of organization should I choose? This tool helps you determine whether you should consider a nonprofit, a for-profit, a co-op or a social enterprise. --- - Published: 2022-12-16 - Modified: 2023-03-09 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/do-it-yourself-centre/ Do-it-yourself centre - Mendicant Skip to content About us A short history Our name What makes us unique? We don’t need much time to become familiar with their challenges or operating environment—we’ve all been there. Whether it involves meeting with boards and volunteers or working together to create solutions for resource-challenged organizations, Mendicant can hit the ground running, saving our clients valuable time and money. Our team is endlessly grateful for the clients we serve. Our clients are often highly motivated people who want to make a difference in the lives of others. At the end of a project, we share their satisfaction of seeing the positive outcome of our work together. Along the way, we may tell a few jokes, make a pun or two, or even share recipes for baked goods. Our clients are very talented people who could be doing anything – but they have chosen to identify a need in the community they serve and do something about it. Mendicant’s team understands that motivation. Our team includes accomplished professionals who have held senior positions in charities, nonprofits, various levels of government and the private sector. Others have programs, processes and structures that need to be more effective and efficient. Some need help clarifying their focus through a strategic plan. What they all have in common is that they could benefit from external help--delivered at the right time, by a knowledgeable team. Working in partnership, Mendicant’s skilled professionals help organizations grow, change and thrive in challenging times. That’s why Mendicant was founded – and why we still do what we do. We regularly support the Mukwashi Trust School in Zambia (a community-run educational innovator). Each year, instead of sending holiday gifts or cards to our clients, we make a donation to the school in support of its educational mission, exemplified by its motto of "prepare today for tomorrow. "We also support a range of causes related to the areas in which we regularly practice, including housing and poverty relief, education, health and social services. We ensure that our supply chain uses community-minded suppliers wherever possible, such as A-Way Express, Newcomer Kitchen, and Greensaver Energy. We were one of the earliest supporters of CivicAction’s DiverseCity Fellows Initiative and were also an early Canadian adopter of The Prince's Seeing is Believing program, under the leadership of the then-Prince of Wales, participating in community meetings between leading corporations and activists from some of Toronto's at-risk communities. For our international work, we audit the carbon footprint of our travel and purchase gold standard carbon offsets (to explore how to address your own organization’s footprint, visit myclimate. org). --- - Published: 2022-12-14 - Modified: 2023-02-28 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/designing-effective-social-enterprises/ The Raw Carrot is an employment-focused social enterprise that partners with churches and non-profits to create meaningful jobs for those living with disabilities and mental illnesses. Mendicant’s team worked with Raw Carrot to analyze its processes and costs and recommended new approaches for its pricing – and we got to taste some amazing soup in the process. Check out the great work at The Raw Carrot https://therawcarrot. com/ --- - Published: 2022-12-14 - Modified: 2023-02-28 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/helping-organizations-diversify-their-revenue/ Collective organizations often struggle to grow as they balance service to their stakeholders with the demands of advocacy and generating revenue. This is particularly the case for organizations that operate in very specific areas such as the environment. The Ontario Environment Industry Association (ONEIA) was facing many of these challenges when we began working with the organization. After conducting research on it's existing and potential supporters, we revamped its membership structure, expanded its events to include an annual conference, and secured a number of cost-shared government programs that delivered benefits to the organization and to provincial policy priorities. The result was a 150% increase in revenue in just two years that allowed the organization to hire more staff and invest in more visible benefit to the community it served. --- - Published: 2022-12-14 - Modified: 2023-01-17 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/a-better-approach-to-strategic-planning/ The mental health space is, unfortunately, seeing a growing demand for services – and this places an additional strain on dedicated community organizations. The Mendicant team worked with one organization that was deadlocked in discussion about which group they should focus on: older, isolated adults? children? teens and young adults? caregivers for those with mental health challenges? Other groups? Rather than wade into the ongoing debate, we used the JigSaw process to co-create a filter with the board that captured the characteristics of an ideal group that the organization could help. After just a few hours of energizing discussion, the board unanimously decided that the organization could have the most impact with teens and young adults and then moved on to a focused day of planning. --- - Published: 2022-12-14 - Modified: 2023-02-28 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/helping-move-past-weve-always-done-it-this-way/ Communities around the world are looking for better ways to include those with different abilities in the public sphere. Mendicant worked with an organization that had pioneered a new way to promote accessibility that, while initially successful, became unaffordable due to changes in the marketplace and significant liability concerns raised by its insurer. This required the organization and its team to fundamentally change their “business as usual” approach. We began by recognizing the energy, time and resources the team had devoted to building its model. It was the solid foundation upon which the organization could now pivot to address other problems in the accessibility space. Mendicant facilitated a productive discussion, grounded in the needs of the community the organization served, which led the participants to identify new focus areas for the organization. --- - Published: 2022-12-14 - Modified: 2023-02-28 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/helping-health-and-social-service-organizations-adapt-to-new-realities/ As one of Ontario’s approximately 50 community-based nonprofit autism service providers, Woodview was grappling with fundamental changes introduced to the Ontario Autism Program in 2019. Mendicant worked with its leadership team and senior managers on a complex project that: Engaged families in the organization’s service area to better understand their needs; Reviewed the organization’s structures, programs and costs; Held briefings with staff, leaders and their board to explain changes in the overall autism system; Designed and held change management training for a variety of staff teams; Held co-design sessions with program staff to decide how to respond to family needs with improved or new programs; and, Provided step-by-step advice on how to capture costs and set prices for their offerings in the new “market. ” By the end of the project, teams working at all levels of the organization had gained new knowledge and skills to move forward in the new autism service environment. --- - Published: 2022-12-14 - Modified: 2023-02-28 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/research-and-data-analysis-for-better-decisions/ In 2021, the Province of Ontario invited autism service organizations to submit proposals for a new program (Urgent Response Services) that would provide immediate help for children and their families in crisis. The proposals hinged on a key number: How many children with an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis (ASD) in a given geographic area would experience a crisis that met the program criteria in a given year? Mendicant’s team worked with a consortium of Northern Ontario providers to co-write their proposal. As there were no studies that could directly answer the key question, we blended data from a number of sources to create an equation that produced a mathematically valid estimate of the number of children the providers would serve in a given year. --- - Published: 2022-12-14 - Modified: 2023-03-09 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/facilitating-and-negotiating-to-achieve-shared-outcomes/ The Royal Conservatory of Music’s Learning Through the Arts program is an innovative Canadian approach that imbeds creative people in classrooms to reinterpret and share learning content in ways that increase student engagement. Schools in the UK shared a challenge similar to the Canadian schools that had been helped by the program, so Mendicant helped negotiate an agreement between Prince Charles’s charities and the Conservatory to pilot the program in key London neighbourhoods. In one day, we were able to get several distinct stakeholders on the same page and lay the groundwork for a partnership. --- - Published: 2022-12-14 - Modified: 2023-02-28 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/training-and-coaching-for-changing-times/ We worked over a number of months with an organization that was undergoing significant, rapid changes. Some key team members had left, while others were disengaging until “things settled down. ” Mendicant’s team held an initial session with the program staff team to better understand the challenges they were facing. Based on their feedback, we designed and delivered three customized training sessions (Change Management 101, Customer Centricity and Thriving in Times of Change) to dozens of staff. We complemented the sessions with direct coaching support to leaders and their teams to help them put their new mindsets and skills and into action. --- - Published: 2022-12-14 - Modified: 2025-10-04 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/what-our-clients-say-about-us/ What our clients say about us - Mendicant Skip to content About us A short history Our name What makes us unique? They gave us an outline of what we needed and we used that information to make a successful funding request to the province. Over the course of a few months, they helped us better understand our program costs, conducted research with our families, worked with us on pricing our services, and provided briefings and training to our staff and board. For some, it’s an easy transition, while others are challenged to make best use of their skills and abilities. Mendicant was asked by two Canadian social organizations, Prince’s Charities Canada and Futurpreneur, to determine the feasibility of a program to help transitioning military personnel start their own businesses. Our team conducted extensive research, determining that this had been successfully done in other countries. We identified key stakeholders already active in the area in Canada and verified that it was worth exploring a comprehensive program. Backed by the research, we helped our clients convene stakeholders and jointly design a more unified approach that became The Prince’s Operation Entrepreneur. This program builds on a successful approach pioneered by Memorial University and gives transitioning military personnel entrepreneurial instruction, mentorship and possible financing. The transition program is currently active in several Canadian universities and has been shared with other jurisdictions around the world. What they all have in common is that they could benefit from external help--delivered at the right time, by a knowledgeable team. Working in partnership, Mendicant’s skilled professionals help organizations grow, change and thrive in challenging times. That’s why Mendicant was founded – and why we still do what we do. We help those dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others, even better at what they do. We have chosen to help others because we share their passion for service and impact. --- - Published: 2022-12-09 - Modified: 2025-10-04 - URL: https://mendicant.ca/ alex-with-king-charles-2How can we better understand community needs and design a program to help?
